Chapter Twenty-Seven

LAN

Lan struggled after he was released from the Exile. He found Ridaln standing across from him, a fortification in place, almost as if Ridaln were somehow drawing on him.

“Are you still influenced?” Ridaln asked. He was standing almost perfectly still. The pose was very strange, his legs twisted into a strange, almost contorted fashion, and it looked as if he were going to stumble forward at any moment. With his hands situated off to his sides, pressing downward as if he were going to try to burst power out of them and take flight, it looked as if he would land on his face the moment he stumbled forward.

“You can release the pattern, Ridaln,” Lan said.

He didn’t move. “I am a little concerned about what you might intend here, Lannerdon,” Ridaln said. “You were not yourself when you first came.”

Lan cocked a brow at him. “You can release it.”

When he didn’t, Lan just focused on his god-touched ability, concentrating it back to himself. It siphoned energy away from Ridaln and let him stumble, staggering just a step. As soon as it did, Ridaln shifted, trying to position his feet in a way that would help prop him up, but he wasn’t able to do so.

Lan breathed out. “That’s better,” he said. “I think it is time you let go of what you have been doing.”

“Why did you do that?” Ridaln asked.

“It wasn’t going to hold me like that.”

He looked past Ridaln. Dannith was staring at him. The older king had a distinguished face. His hair was a close-cropped silver now, though it had once been longer, and a little bit wilder. Lan remembered what he had looked like in the tower, serving as a prisoner to the Raven Queen, but that had changed when they had been released.

Lan tipped his head, nodding to Dannith. “My apologies for coming like this,” he said. “I realize that I forced my way into the palace, but at the time, I thought it was necessary.”

“You no longer do?” Dannith asked.

It was a good question, especially given what Lan had done. “Not any longer.”

“Sophie claims he is unharmed,” Ridaln said to Dannith, “but she also says that—”

“You can talk to her?” Lan asked, turning to Ridaln.

“I have the ability to speak to your sister over distances. She has shown me the proper pose, and the technique is—”

“Show me,” Lan said.

Ridaln snorted. “I’m afraid you’re not a sorcerer, so having that ability is impossible.”

It might be impossible to do using sorcery, but Lan wondered if he might be able to find a technique that would be somewhat similar. It would take working with his power in a different way, though he wasn’t sure if he knew the technique.

“You could describe how you do it,” he suggested to Ridaln.

“And if you were to stay, I could study with you.”

“That is not possible,” Lan said.

“Because you want to understand more about the Emerald Queen,” Dannith said.

Lan straightened as he looked at the soldiers standing along the walls. He counted seven, at least that he saw.
